B.Sc. (Honors) Chemistry Programme
The main objectives of the programme will be to help students to develop
• a comprehensive knowledge based on concepts, principles and theories related to chemistry that spans the traditional sub-disciplines (inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and analytical chemistry) as well as advanced and emerging fields of chemical science.
• broad and balanced knowledge and understanding of key chemical concepts.
• practical skills for understanding and assessing risks for working safely and competently in the chemistry laboratory.
• the ability to apply standard approach to the solution of problems in chemistry.
• spirit of cooperation and team work as the students will be working in groups in the laboratory. The student will develop ability to contribute meaningfully to team ethos and goals.
• scientific reasoning as the students will learn to draw logical conclusions by examining, experimenting and relating information.
• skills in the operation of various scientific instruments used in chemistry laboratories.
• a knowledge and skill base that will enable the students to proceed for higher studies in chemistry or multi-disciplinary areas involving chemistry.
At the end of this programme, the students will
• acquire a broad understanding of various concepts, principles and theories related to all traditional sub-disciplines of chemistry as well as advanced and evolving branches of chemistry and other allied subjects.
• use technologies/instrumentation to perform accurate quantitative measurements to gather and analyze, interpret experimental results, perform calculations on these results and draw reasonable, accurate conclusions.
• be equipped to solve problems of numerical, synthetic and analytical nature that are best approached with critical thinking.
• develop skills in safe-handling of chemicals, considering their physical and chemical properties including any specific hazards associated with their handling and use.
• acquire understanding of the theory involved and skills in the operation of standard instrumentation used in chemistry laboratory.
IPG Chemistry Programme
? transmitting knowledge based on concepts, principles and theories relating to chemistry that spans the traditional sub-disciplines (inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and analytical chemistry) as well as advanced and emerging fields of chemical science.
? developing their quantitative and qualitative skills, provide opportunities for critical thinking and team work, in addition to exposing them to techniques useful for applied areas of scientific study.
? imparting knowledge in the theory and applications of various spectroscopic techniques which are very important characterization techniques for different fields of science.
? making students understand the insights of statistical methods in qualitative and quantitative analysis and practice of different analytical instruments for chemical analysis.
? developing an awareness of the role of chemistry in present-day societal and global issues, including areas such as sustainability and green chemistry.
? inculcating a sense of appreciation for the role of chemistry in daily life.
? gaining awareness about the health and environmental safety of chemicals that are used in the laboratories and follows protocols for their safe use and safe disposal.
After going through the five years of study, IPG chemistry students can use the comprehensive knowledge and skills gained, to
? observe, evaluate and interpret scientific phenomena and processes, particularly related to the chemical science.
? interconnect effectively the principles and practice of chemistry.
? address issues of environment, health and development from a perspective of chemistry.
? function effectively as a member/leader in diverse teams/groups.
? engage in independent learning in the broadest context of scientific advancement.
? design experiments, analyze, synthesize and interpret data to provide solutions to different industrial problems by working in the pure, inter and multi-disciplinary areas of chemical sciences.
? demonstrate the ability to perform accurate quantitative measurements with an understanding of the theory and use of modern chemical instrumentation, interpret experimental results, perform calculations on these results and draw reasonable, accurate conclusions.
